Last updated: 1 October 2026 | Data used: JEE Main 2024-2026 and JoSAA closing ranks
In JoSAA 2025, the final-round closing rank for CSE at NIT Trichy (General, Other State) was 1,449, about 99.91 percentile. In 2026, Round 5 closed at 1,373. So 99 percentile alone does not reach top NIT CSE for General Other State candidates.
JEE Main Marks vs Percentile: Actual Session Data
NTA does not publish one official chart that links raw marks to percentile. It calculates percentile separately for every shift, so the same marks can land at different percentiles on different days. The tables below show the range of marks that matched each percentile across the shifts of a session, using shift-wise results compiled by education portals from NTA data. Read each cell as a band.
An easy shift pushes you toward the top of the band and a tough shift toward the bottom. The spread is large. In January 2025, 99 percentile needed 148 marks in the toughest shift and 200 in the easiest, a gap of 52 marks. In JEE Main 2026 Session 1, the same percentile needed between 153 and 186 marks.
JEE Main 2024
| Percentile | Session 1 (January) marks | Session 2 (April) marks |
|---|---|---|
| 99 | 156 to 236 | 186 to 215 |
| 90 | 81 to 139 | NA |
JEE Main 2025
| Percentile | Session 1 (January) marks | Session 2 (April) marks |
|---|---|---|
| 99 | 148 to 200 | 172 to 203 |
| 95 | 96 to 142 | 117 to 148 |
| 90 | 70 to 112 | 91 to 117 |
JEE Main 2026
| Percentile | Session 1 (January) marks | Session 2 (April) marks |
|---|---|---|
| 99 | 153 to 186 | 151 to 195 |
| 95 | 99 to 129 | 96 to 140 |
| 90 | NA | 61 to 105 |
How to Convert Percentile to Rank
Percentile shows the share of candidates you outscored. The formula is Percentile = (candidates scoring below you ÷ total candidates appeared) × 100, which rearranges to Rank ≈ (100 − Percentile) × candidates appeared ÷ 100. Once you have placed your score using JEE Main marks vs percentile data, this formula gives the rank you can compare with JoSAA closing ranks.
Here is a worked example for 2026. NTA data shows 15,38,468 unique candidates appeared across both sessions. A candidate at 97.5 percentile has a rank of (100 − 97.5) × 15,38,468 ÷ 100, which is about 38,462. Your final result uses the better of your two sessions, so one strong attempt is enough.
Quick percentile to rank calculator (2026 pool)
| Percentile | Calculation | Estimated AIR |
|---|---|---|
| 99.9 | 0.1% of 15,38,468 | 1,538 |
| 99.5 | 0.5% of 15,38,468 | 7,692 |
| 99 | 1% of 15,38,468 | 15,385 |
| 98 | 2% of 15,38,468 | 30,769 |
| 97 | 3% of 15,38,468 | 46,154 |
| 95 | 5% of 15,38,468 | 76,923 |
| 90 | 10% of 15,38,468 | 1,53,847 |
What Each Percentile Means: Colleges Students Actually Got
JEE Main marks vs percentile data only becomes useful when you attach a college to it. JoSAA allots seats by All India Rank and, for reserved categories, by category rank. Every milestone below converts a percentile into an estimated AIR using the 2026 pool, then compares it with JoSAA closing ranks from 2025 and 2026. Home State and Other State seats close at different ranks, so the same percentile can lead to different colleges for different students. The category split of the 2026 pool explains why reserved candidates see smaller ranks.
| Category | Candidates appeared (2026) | Share of pool |
|---|---|---|
| General | 5,38,239 | 35.0% |
| OBC | 6,11,953 | 39.8% |
| EWS | 1,80,086 | 11.7% |
| SC | 1,56,038 | 10.1% |
| ST | 52,152 | 3.4% |
99+ Percentile
- Rank range: AIR 1 to about 15,385. A 99.9 percentile sits near AIR 1,538 and a 99.5 percentile near AIR 7,692. You are comfortably eligible for JEE Advanced, since 2,50,182 candidates qualified in 2026.
- Colleges students got: In the 2025 final round, CSE closed for General Other State candidates at 1,449 in Trichy, 1,827 in Surathkal, 2,409 in Warangal, 3,431 in Rourkela, 4,594 in MNNIT Allahabad, 5,222 in Calicut and 5,601 in MNIT Jaipur. In Round 5 of 2026, the figures were 1,373 for Trichy, 2,581 for Warangal, 4,266 for Rourkela, 5,769 for Calicut and 5,868 for Jaipur. The top three NIT CSE seats need roughly 99.8 percentile or better, and a 99.5 percentile candidate at AIR 7,692 misses all of the NIT CSE seats above. In Round 5 of 2026, IIIT Allahabad IT closed at 5,420, IIITM Gwalior CSE at 8,888 and IIIT Lucknow Computer Science at 9,175. Newer NITs fit the lower end, with Round 5 of 2026 closing CSE at 12,281 in Durgapur and 13,993 in Silchar.
- Branches: ECE at Trichy closed at 3,285 in Round 5 of 2026, about 99.79 percentile. Mechanical at Trichy closed at 8,754, about 99.43 percentile.
- Category and home state effect: Home State CSE seats closed at higher ranks than Other State seats in 2025, at 4,569 in Trichy, 2,800 in Surathkal and 3,530 in Warangal. Reserved candidates compete on category rank. Trichy CSE closed at category rank 257 for EWS, 434 for OBC-NCL and 283 for SC.
97-99 Percentile
- Rank range: AIR about 15,385 to 46,154.
- Colleges students got: CSE at the NITs above is out of reach for General Other State candidates in this band, even at the newer NITs that closed at Durgapur 12,281 and Silchar 13,993 in Round 5 of 2026 . In Round 5 of 2026, CSE closed at 20,654 in IIITDM Kancheepuram, 21,116 in IIIT Pune, 25,246 in IIIT Guwahati, 31,149 in IIIT Kota and 43,688 in IIIT Kottayam.
- Branches: Core branches at top NITs fit here. In 2025, Civil closed between about 15,800 and 20,900 at Trichy and at 22,901 at Surathkal. In Round 5 of 2026, Civil closed at 20,111 at Trichy, 23,975 at Surathkal and 26,626 at Warangal. A 98 percentile candidate, at AIR near 30,769, usually faces the CSE versus core trade-off. The choice is CSE at an IIIT or a core branch at a top NIT, and the two differ in campus, placements and career path, so compare both before locking a choice.
- Category and home state effect: Home State CSE seats at Calicut (8,428) and Rourkela (7,853) closed well inside the 99+ band in 2025, so they stay out of reach here. For OBC-NCL, EWS, SC and ST candidates, the category rank on the scorecard decides the outcome, so check it before the percentile.
95 Percentile
- Rank range: AIR about 46,154 to 76,923 for the 95 to 97 band.
- Colleges students got: In Round 5 of 2026, CSE closed at 47,762 in IIIT Kalyani, 48,416 in IIIT Bhagalpur, 50,027 in IIIT Agartala and 59,813 in IIIT Senapati Manipur, all inside this band. A candidate at exactly 95 percentile (about AIR 76,923) sits beyond these CSE seats and should look at ECE and other branches. General Other State candidates here usually look beyond CSE at IIITs and GFTIs, at less demanded branches in newer NITs, and at the CSAB special rounds that follow the final JoSAA round. IIIT closing ranks vary widely by institute and branch, so filter the JoSAA table by your category, quota and gender pool.
- Branches: The CSE versus core question changes at this level. The core branches quoted above also close before this band begins, so branch choice depends on which institute you can reach.
- Category and home state effect: This is the band where category and quota matter most. Your category rank is far smaller than your AIR, so NIT seats can open for OBC-NCL, EWS, SC and ST candidates that stay closed to General candidates. Home State seats also close at higher ranks than Other State seats.
90 Percentile
- Rank range: AIR about 76,923 to 1,53,847 for the 90 to 95 band.
- Colleges students got: Because JEE Main marks vs percentile is calculated per shift, 90 percentile meant 70 to 112 marks in January 2025 and 91 to 117 in April 2025. The General cutoff for JEE Advanced eligibility has stayed near 93 percentile in recent years (93.24 in 2024), so a General candidate at 90 percentile falls short while reserved categories have lower cutoffs. No NIT or IIIT CSE closing rank in this blog reaches this band, so General candidates should plan around CSAB special rounds, GFTIs, state engineering colleges and private universities that accept JEE Main.
- Branches: NIT seats are realistic mainly through Home State quota or a strong category rank, and mostly in less demanded branches. Check each branch separately, since closing ranks within one NIT can differ by more than 20,000 ranks.
- Category and home state effect: Category rank and quota decide the result here more than anywhere else. A reserved candidate with a good category rank can still reach an NIT.
Below 90 Percentile
- Rank range: AIR beyond about 1,53,847.
- Colleges students got: JoSAA 2025 included 26 IIITs and 47 GFTIs, and many of them fill seats at ranks far beyond the top institutes. State engineering colleges through state counselling, GFTIs through CSAB and private universities that accept JEE Main are the main routes.
- Branches: Choose by branch and campus quality, not only by institute name. A strong programme at a state college can serve you better than a weak branch at a famous campus.
- Category and home state effect: Home State quotas in state counselling are often the biggest advantage at this level. If another JEE Main session is still open, remember that the better of your two sessions counts, so a second attempt can lift your rank.
College Trends by Percentile: Last 3 Years
This table tracks General Other State CSE closing ranks at five benchmark NITs. Reading it next to JEE Main marks vs percentile data shows why no fixed safe percentile exists, because the same percentile bought different seats in different years.
| NIT (CSE, General, Other State) | 2024 | 2025 | 2026 | Equivalent percentile (2026 pool) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NIT Trichy | 1,224 | 1,449 | 1,373 | 99.91 |
| NIT Surathkal | 1,615 | 1,827 | 1954 (Round 1) | 99.87 |
| NIT Warangal | 2,186 | 2,409 | 2,581 | 99.83 |
| NIT Rourkela | 2,940 | 3,431 | 4,266 | 99.72 |
| NIT Calicut | 4,482 | 5,222 | 5,769 | 99.63 |
Closing ranks rose between 2024 and 2025 at all five NITs. In 2026, Trichy tightened to 1,373, while Surathkal (1,954), Warangal, Rourkela and Calicut closed at higher ranks than in 2025. Closing ranks also drift upward within a year, as Warangal moved from 2,238 in Round 1 to 2,581 in Round 5 of 2026. Seat matrix changes, candidate numbers (15,38,468 appeared in 2026), branch preferences and CSE demand all play a part. The number of rounds also changed, with six in 2025 and five in 2026, so compare final rounds with care.
NIT Closing Ranks from JoSAA
The table shows CSE closing ranks from the 2025 final round, Round 6.
| NIT (CSE, 2025) | General Other State | General Home State | EWS | OBC-NCL | SC | General percentile (2026 pool) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NIT Trichy | 1,449 | 4,569 | 257 | 434 | 283 | 99.91 |
| NIT Surathkal | 1,827 | 2,800 | 316 | 577 | 364 | 99.88 |
| NIT Warangal | 2,409 | 3,530 | 309 | 695 | 447 | 99.84 |
| NIT Rourkela | 3,431 | 7,853 | 438 | 1,214 | 409 | 99.78 |
| NIT Calicut | 5,222 | 8,428 | 662 | 1,790 | 829 | 99.66 |
ECE, Mechanical and Civil Closing Ranks at Top NITs
CSE closes first, but most students end up in another branch, so the gap between branches matters as much as the percentile itself. The table shows Round 5 (final round) 2026 closing ranks for General, Other State, gender-neutral seats at five top NITs, from the JoSAA opening and closing rank file. Read each row across to see how far you slide when you move from CSE to a core branch.
At NIT Trichy, CSE closed at 1,373, Mechanical at 8,754 and Civil at 20,111. At NIT Calicut, the same move meant 5,769, then 18,652, then 34,315. Use it alongside JEE Main marks vs percentile data to choose a branch you can realistically target. A candidate at 99 percentile (about AIR 15,385) clears Civil at all five NITs but misses Mechanical at four of them.
| NIT (Round 5, 2026) | CSE | ECE | EEE or Electrical | Mechanical | Civil |

IIIT and GFTI Closing Ranks: Where 95 Percentile and Below Students Land
For General candidates below roughly 99 percentile, IIITs and GFTIs are where most CSE seats are found. JoSAA 2025 included 26 IIITs and 47 GFTIs, and their closing ranks stretch far beyond the NITs. Once JEE Main marks vs percentile data gives you a rank, the table below shows where it lands. It lists Round 5 2026 closing ranks for open category, gender-neutral, All India quota seats in CSE unless stated, with the percentile each rank equals on the 2026 pool.
The pattern is steep. IIIT Allahabad IT closed at 5,420, about 99.65 percentile, while IIIT Kalyani CSE closed at 47,762, about 96.90. Against 2025, CSE closing ranks loosened at IIIT Kota (27,400 to 31,149), IIIT Kottayam (40,217 to 43,688) and IIIT Kalyani (44,154 to 47,762), while IIIT Allahabad IT tightened from 6,094 to 5,420.
| IIIT and programme | Round 5 2026 closing rank | Approx. percentile |
|---|---|---|
| IIIT Allahabad, IT | 5,420 | 99.65 |
| IIITM Gwalior, CSE | 8,888 | 99.42 |
| IIIT Lucknow, Computer Science | 9,175 | 99.40 |
| IIITDM Jabalpur, CSE | 15,371 | 99.00 |
| IIITDM Kancheepuram, CSE | 20,654 | 98.66 |
| IIIT Pune, CSE | 21,116 | 98.63 |
| IIIT Sri City, CSE | 23,052 | 98.50 |
| IIIT Guwahati, CSE | 25,246 | 98.36 |
| IIIT Tiruchirappalli, CSE | 27,913 | 98.19 |
| IIIT Nagpur, CSE | 29,369 | 98.09 |
| IIIT Kota, CSE | 31,149 | 97.98 |
| IIIT Vadodara, CSE | 31,686 | 97.94 |
| IIIT Kilohrad (Sonepat), CSE | 37,632 | 97.55 |
| IIIT Kottayam, CSE | 43,688 | 97.16 |
| IIIT Kalyani, CSE | 47,762 | 96.90 |
| IIIT Senapati Manipur, CSE | 59,813 | 96.11 |
GFTIs close later still. For open category CSE, IIEST Shibpur closed at 13,881 in 2025 and BIT Mesra at 16,476. Assam University Silchar closed at 45,009 and Tezpur University at 52,131. The table shows two years so you can see the direction of travel. Add the 2026 final-round figures from josaa.nic.in once you have checked them.
| GFTI (CSE, open category) | 2024 closing rank | 2025 closing rank | Approx. percentile (2025 rank) |
|---|---|---|---|
| IIEST Shibpur | 14,458 | 13,881 | 99.10 |
| BIT Mesra | 16,346 | 16,476 | 98.93 |
| Assam University, Silchar | 41,353 | 45,009 | 97.07 |
| Tezpur University | 50,961 | 52,131 | 96.61 |
A 95 percentile (about AIR 76,923) sits beyond every CSE closing rank in these two tables, and IIIT Senapati Manipur at 59,813 is the furthest. Even the last ECE seat listed there, at 70,259 (about 95.43 percentile), needs a little more than 95 percentile. At 90 percentile (about AIR 1,53,847), no seat in the IIIT or GFTI tables above is reachable for a General candidate. These students should look at other branches and institutes, Home State quota, state counselling and the CSAB special rounds. Reserved candidates compare category ranks instead, and those open many more seats.
Which College Can I Get? Quick Score-Band Chart
This chart turns JEE Main marks vs percentile estimates into likely outcomes. It uses 2025 and 2026 JoSAA closing ranks, and it reads reserved categories by category rank.
| Percentile band (estimated AIR) | General, Other State | Home State (General) | OBC-NCL, EWS, SC (category rank) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 99+ (up to 15,385) | CSE at Trichy, Surathkal, Warangal needs about 99.8+. Rourkela, MNNIT Allahabad, Calicut, MNIT Jaipur CSE sit at 99.6 to 99.8. | 90 to 95 (76,923 to 1,53,847) | Above about 93 percentile you qualify for JEE Advanced. Otherwise plan around CSAB, GFTIs, state and private colleges. | Check Home State quota at newer NITs. | Category rank and quota decide the outcome. |
| Below 90 (beyond 1,53,847) | State colleges, GFTIs through CSAB, private universities. | State quota in state counselling. | Check state reservation seats as well as JoSAA. |
What Changes in 2027
- JoSAA publishes the seat matrix before counselling, so any new NITs, IIITs or branches will be added to these tables then.
- The number of JoSAA rounds can change, as it did from six in 2025 to five in 2026, so every table here names its round.
- NTA confirms 2027 session dates and any pattern change in its official notice, and this page will follow it.
- We will refresh this JEE Main marks vs percentile page within 24 hours of each result.
FAQs
- What percentile is 100 marks in JEE Main?
JEE Main marks vs percentile depends on the shift. In most shifts, 100 marks falls between about 90 and 95 percentile. In January 2025, 90 percentile needed 70 to 112 marks and 95 percentile needed 96 to 142, so 100 marks fell below 90 in the easiest shifts. - Is 90 percentile enough for NIT?
For General candidates in regular JoSAA rounds, usually no. A 90 percentile is about AIR 1,53,847 on the 2026 pool, far beyond the NIT closing ranks quoted in this blog. Reserved categories, Home State quota and CSAB special rounds can change the outcome, so check your category rank and JoSAA’s closing ranks. - What rank is 95 percentile in JEE Main?
Using the 2026 pool of 15,38,468 candidates, 95 percentile is about AIR 76,923, which is 5 percent of the candidates. The exact rank depends on the number of candidates that year and on the merged result. Use this as an estimate and rely on the rank printed on your scorecard. - Which NIT can I get with 99 percentile?
A 99 percentile is about AIR 15,385. For General Other State candidates, that is beyond CSE at every NIT quoted here. It can reach Civil at the top NITs, Mechanical at Calicut, and IIIT CSE seats such as IIIT Kota. Home State and category ranks widen the options. - Can I get CSE at 95 percentile?
It is unlikely for General candidates. A 95 percentile is about AIR 76,923, while the furthest CSE closing rank in the IIIT table is 59,813 at IIIT Senapati Manipur in 2026. Strong category ranks, Home State quota, GFTIs and state colleges are the realistic routes, so check each programme’s closing rank on JoSAA.
